Japan's Auto Companies at the Millennium:
Part of the Fabric of America

Employment Contributes to U.S. Economy

In 1998, 307,000 Americans were employed by Japanese-affiliated automakers (including distributors) and their dealers.

Japanese auto plants in the U.S. currently employ almost 46,000 Americans. Japanese R&D centers in the U.S. currently employ more than 2,500 Americans.

More than 6,500 U.S. auto dealers sell Japanese-brand vehicles and employ more than 240,000 Americans.

Eighty-six percent of Americans surveyed in September 1996 thought that the Japanese automakers' creation of 40,000 American manufacturing jobs and more than 300,000 American jobs in distributions and dealerships represents a significant contribution to the American economy.
